Once they were human beings. Their fates are closely linked to the place to which they have now returned - as angels. Now they stand there - figures of remembrance - whose story will not be forgotten. High above us on the rooftops they linger, contemplating the world as it has changed. Down on the street, strange figures have appeared. A woman has a pram full of binoculars, lets passers-by look through them and tells the stories of the winged ones. A man eavesdrops on the voices of the angels and makes them audible to visitors with the help of a giant funnel apparatus - hours of wondrous encounters. The angels are back.
On the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall, they appeared for the first time above the rooftops of Berlin: eight winged beings. They embodied fates from the time the Wall was built. Curious angel explorers and installations told their stories to the people on the ground, images that went around the world on 9 November 2009. At the opening of the Capital of Culture 2010 in Essen, the project found a new edition, as it did in England and Spain. For special occasions, Theater ANU and Bartel Meyer/LEDESTRA research new stories, the angels appear as memory figures of the respective place.

Angels and ground figures appear three times per play day, for 45 to 60 minutes each time. Their stories can also be read in free flyers and taken home. All ENGELs about... projects are published on the homepage www.land-der-engel.de documented.
